Domain Names Explained

A domain name is the bit after the http://www. that gets typed into your web browser. Domain names can be anything you like as long as somebody doesn't already own it. It's the name of your website.

When you choose a domain name don't just think about the name of your company, also think about what you do.
For example if your company is called Bloggs & Sons and you are Central Heating specialists then you could have the domain name:

bloggsandsons.co.uk

But it may be better to have a domain like:

centralheatingherefordshire.co.uk

When the second domain name appears in print it tells people exactly what you do and where you do it. This can be a much better way of promoting your business. Of course, if your company is very well known in your area and it has a catchy name then use it. You wouldn't have Coca-Cola calling themselves fizzydrinks.com!!

Do I get a .co.uk or a .com? Generally speaking a .com is for companies that promote themselves internationally and a .co.uk is for companies that stick to the UK. Really, it doesn't matter which one you get. A .co.uk domain name tends to be cheaper and more popular in the UK.
